Whether on campus or in the broader world, community depends on bridge builders who can listen to differing perspectives, challenge their own assumptions, or work together toward shared goals.

Drawing on your own experiences, what have you learned about engaging across differences and how has it shaped the way you think about building bridges, enhancing community, and working with others? (350 word limit) 

JHU wants to admit a cohort of students who are open-minded and ready to create connections with those from different backgrounds or with different perspectives. With that in mind, they’re asking about times you were faced with people who think differently from you and what you learned through the experience. To make sure your response stands out from the pack, be as specific and purposeful as possible. What was the situation? In what ways did the two (or more) of you differ? How did you navigate that difference to achieve your shared goal? Maybe you and your co-worker at the coffee shop struggled to connect due to your difference in age and economic background, but you eventually bonded over your shared love of manga, improving both your relationship and your efficiency during your shift. Perhaps your co-counselor at summer camp took a different approach to resolving conflicts among campers than you did, and instead of getting angry, you asked about it in a non-judgmental way, leading the two of you to devise a new approach, taking both of your experiences into account. How did these events inform your approach to building bridges or fostering community? What did you learn about yourself and about working with others?
