Grinnell College 2026-27 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 1 optional short essay of 200-450 words

Supplemental Essay Type(s): DiversityWhyCommunity

We value the opportunity to learn more about you and what you would contribute to our community. You can tell us more about your background and fit for Grinnell through a short, optional writing prompt:

Grinnell’s core values include supporting a diverse community that is respectful, egalitarian, and committed to the common good. How might your background, respect for the lived experiences of others, and/or eagerness to be exposed to new perspectives equip you to thrive at Grinnell and serve the common good?

Your response should be a minimum of 200 words and no more than 450 words. This prompt is optional, but recommended. Once you submit your Common Application or QuestBridge application, you will be able to submit your response to the prompt your online application portal. The short answer prompt may change from year to year.

This is a kind of DiversityWhyCommunity Essay hybrid because admissions wants to: A) know what has shaped you, B) learn about how you see yourself engaging in Grinnell’s community, and C) hear about the specific ways in which you will get involved (which requires demonstrating fit). This is a lot to accomplish in 450 words, but fear not, you’ve got this! Grinnell wants to accept students from a range of backgrounds who will contribute to a collaborative university community, so tell admissions about what makes you you and how you will engage with others on campus. Start by grabbing a notebook and marking out separate spaces for “background,” “respect for the lived experiences of others,” and “eagerness to be exposed to new perspectives.” Then, jot down any personal characteristics or anecdotes from your own life that relate to those three categories. Once you have a few ideas, isolate a specific story or anecdote that will offer admissions insight into these aspects of your personality (remember, you don’t have to cover every aspect of your intricate, complicated, interesting self). Then connect that experience or identity to the vision you have for yourself at Grinnell. Maybe you come from a family of health professionals and know a lot about first aid and treating wounds, skills you hope to hone by serving as an EMT. Perhaps your next-door neighbor growing up was in a wheelchair, and the respect you gained for their lived experience has primed you to eventually study law and advocate for the differently abled. In the end, you need to describe how you plan to engage in the Grinnell community in a way that draws on your past while demonstrating how you will serve the common good on campus or after graduation. Show admissions that you are a thoughtful, respectful person and that you’ve done your research so you’re ready to dive headfirst into the Grinnell community!
