Hamilton College 2026-27 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 1 short answer of 350 words

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why

At Hamilton, we each bring different backgrounds and perspectives, and we teach one another about the world through our individual and shared experiences. What would you like us to know about you and your interest in Hamilton? (350 words)

Hamilton is asking two things in this prompt: Who are you, and why us? To answer the first question, think about what aspects of your personality, interests, experiences, background, or perspectives are crucial to who you are. What information would your application be incomplete without? Try to think of things that you didn’t cover in your common app or elsewhere in your application materials. Maybe your academic interests lie in math and economics, but you spend your free time leading a knitting circle in your neighborhood. Perhaps you became the translator when your grandparents immigrated to the US, which opened your eyes to the challenges of navigating an unfamiliar culture, inspiring you to lend your voice to those who can’t speak out. There are no wrong answers here; admissions really does want to know who you are and what makes you tick.

As you approach the second question, put on your research hat and spend some time exploring Hamilton’s campus and/or website so you can communicate your interest for admissions. In other words, show off your fit! Reference specific courses, professors, clubs, research labs, study abroad opportunities, the open curriculum, and aspects of the campus culture that particularly excite you. Beyond what you would gain from your education, you should also think about what you would contribute to their community. Do you see an opportunity to bring your Korean culture to campus with a potluck or recipe swap? Are you ready to jump headfirst into the school paper to learn the ropes from upperclassmen and bring in a fresh perspective? See if you can tie your two answers together to show admissions that Hamilton is the right place for you—and you for it.
