Indiana University Bloomington 2026-27 Application Essay Question Explanation
The Requirements: One essay of 200-400 words if applying via Apply IU
Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why
As part of your application, regardless of which platform you choose, you will need to submit an essay. If you are applying through the Common Application, you can choose from any of the essay prompts in the application. If you are applying through Apply IU, you will need to submit the IU-specific essay using the prompt below.
IU-specific essay: In 200–400 words, describe your academic and career plans and any special interest (for example, undergraduate research, academic interests, leadership opportunities, etc.) that you are eager to pursue as an undergraduate at Indiana University. Also, if you encountered any unusual circumstances, challenges, or obstacles in pursuit of your education, you may share those experiences and how you overcame them. Please note that this essay may be used for scholarship consideration.
This is another good ol’ Why Essay; admissions wants to know what you want to major in and why you want to study it at IU. What interests you and why? How have you approached learning more about your subject of interest and where do you hope it’ll take you in the future? If you can build a bridge between your own interests and the resources available at IU, you’ll be well on your way to demonstrating your fit. So, set aside an hour or two and commit to some serious research on the IU website. Look up information about news and research coming out of your department of interest, courses available, and opportunities other undergrads have had studying in your area of choice. If you can point to specific resources (classes, professors, clubs, etc.), your response will be stronger for it. Even if you have a wide array of interests, consider explaining how two or three departments might cross-pollinate with each other or foster your interest in a larger theme. Also make sure you describe how you see yourself fitting into the academic community. Are you looking forward to undertaking research? Do you plan to start a new academic club? Are you excited to join a study abroad program and bring back what you learn to your cohort? Finally, if you had any unusual obstacles during your high school years (i.e., an international move, a serious injury, a medical diagnosis, etc.), this is the place to mention that and how you managed it. Remember, your ultimate goal here is to show that you’re the perfect fit for IU—and vice versa.
Note that if you submit your application through the Common App, you do not have to write this essay.
