Soka University of America 2021-22 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 2 essays of 500-750 words

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why

During January block, Soka students participate in a Learning Cluster or research seminar where students work in teams with faculty to propose, research, and model constructive approaches to local, regional and/or global issues. What question would you investigate during a Learning Cluster? Describe why this topic is one you are passionate about and how you envision solving or supporting this particular issue. (500-750 words)

Imagine all the people… For this prompt it’s tempting to solve world peace, but the more realistic and specific you can get, the easier this one is to tackle. Let’s avoid Miss. America platitudes and focus on, say, public transportation between urban and rural areas or finding a new solution to wheelchair accessibility in public buildings. One way to approach this is to utilize an issue you’re already passionate about. What have you already volunteered for or worked to solve in your community? Start there and you’ll see that you already have some ideas brewing. You don’t need to have the solution for this essay, but you do need to identify a need, explore angles from which to approach the problem, and suggest some ideas for how your group might work together–combining efforts and different areas of expertise.

In today’s world, what is your purpose in seeking a liberal arts education? Among the many fine colleges and universities you might attend, how do you think SUA could help you fulfill that purpose? (500-750 words)

Soka University of America wants to know that you’ve given your application some thought. You’re not applying all willy nilly, but have carefully considered your options and decided that SUA would be a great institution at which to study.

So, why are you seeking a liberal arts education? If you’re not really sure how a liberal arts degree differs from any other kind of degree, start by educating yourself. Next, articulate for admissions why a well-rounded education is important to you. Do you think a liberal arts education will allow you to build upon your communication and problem solving skills, preparing you for law school? Maybe you think it will help you to be more marketable once you enter the working world, prepared to work in a variety of fields. Whatever your reason may be, make it clear. Next, explain why Soka, in particular, is the school to help you accomplish your goals (law school, marketability, etc.). Does the general education curriculum stand out to you? If so, why? Demonstrate your interest and admissions is bound to be impressed.
