Mary Baldwin University 2025-26 Supplemental Essay Guide
Mary Baldwin University 2025-26 Application Essay Question Explanations
The Requirements: 2 essays of 250 words
Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why
We want to understand what you’re looking for in a college experience, and how MBU can support your goals and growth.
In a few sentences, tell us why you are interested in attending Mary Baldwin University. (250 words)
If you’ve looked at any other supplements before this one, you have probably already seen some version of this question: why here? In almost every case, the objective is the same and twofold: (1) You need to demonstrate a solid knowledge of what the school has to offer. And (2) you should leverage that knowledge to clearly demonstrate your interest in the school. So, start by researching Mary Baldwin (and yes, you will need to do this for every Why essay), directing your attention to the departments, majors, and other opportunities that interest you. What do you want to learn? Read about professors and notable alumni in your field—is there any research going on or awards that interest you? Pick out classes to take and clubs to join, visualizing yourself there. Think about your own goals for your college studies and future career: Do you want to become the best biologist you can be? How will MBU support that goal? Will you become a global citizen by taking advantage of study abroad programs and the International Affairs program? Make sure your choices reveal something important about who you are, what you value, and why MBU is the right choice for you.
At Mary Baldwin, we love learning what makes each person unique: your interests, talents, values, and even the little quirks that make you you.
Tell us three things about you so we can get to know you better. (250 words)
With this prompt, admissions is hoping to see a different side of you, perhaps one that is less intellectual (unless that’s just who you are, in which case, rock on with your nerdy self) and a little more casual. Start by making a list. Write down everything that comes to mind. You can edit and revise later—no idea is too silly to jot down! Maybe you and your bestie can make intricate cat’s cradle figures with yarn. Perhaps you love retro videogames and figured out how to hook up your dad’s old Atari to your flat screen TV. Once you’ve narrowed your list down to three (3) things, see if you can weave together a narrative that gives admissions a little taste of what it would be like to hang out with you. How do you connect with your peers? What most excites you? What are the quirks that make you you? By the time admissions puts down your application, they should feel like your personality is jumping off the page.
