Lawrence University 2019-20 Application Essay Question Explanation

The Requirements: 2 short responses of 47 words each

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why, Oddball

Short answers: Below are two questions to help us get to know you better through your short answers to them. 47 well-chosen words—give or take a few—should work. Choose to answer one or both.

Lawrence is NOT messing around with long supplemental essays. You’ve got 47 words (give or take) to respond to one or both of these prompts. Our advice? Answer both if you can–and be concise!

Why Lawrence? It’s a short question seeking a short answer.

Lawrence is not looking for an essay that connects your past experience to your future goals; instead, they want you to keep it short and sweet. Why do you want to attend this liberal arts college and conservatory of music in Appleton, Wisconsin? It will be a challenge to be specific and personalize your response with so few words at your disposal, but if you speak your truth and use your words wisely, we’re confident you’ll knock this short response out of the park.

The Chandler Senior Experience is a self-designed project that all students must complete during their senior year, showing off their passions, interest, and skills they’ve developed during their time at Lawrence. Every graduating senior produces something unique – an independent or collaborative project, major seminar paper, portfolio, performance, or exhibition. Knowing what you know about yourself right now and what your interests are, what might your senior experience project look like during your final year at Lawrence?

It can be difficult to make predictions this far in the future (especially if you’re undecided!). Lawrence isn’t looking for you to make a firm commitment, though; admissions just wants to see that you can envision yourself as a senior on their campus. They also want to get a little more insight into what interests you, so do a little brainstorming and go with your gut–and don’t limit yourself with what you think you could achieve now–you’re going to learn so much in the next few years! If you finish your 47-word response and think to yourself, “Dang, that would be super cool to create/write/perform,” then you did it right!
