Elon University 2020-21 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 3 short answers; 1 essay of 200-250 words.

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Oddball, Short Answer

THINK FAST: In addition to the essay you provided with your Common Application, Elon would like to learn more about you and your interests. So don’t think hard, think fast. (Maximum answer is two sentences per question.)

What brings you joy? (30 words)
We’re in your hometown. Where should we eat and what should we order? (30 words)
Name three songs from your perfect playlist. (30 words)

Admissions is giving you the opportunity to think fast, not hard, and roll with the punches. So, take advantage! Perhaps, in sharing what brings you joy, you want to tell admissions about the look on your brother’s face everytime you agree to play cops and robbers with him. Maybe you want to encourage the admissions department to stop by the old diner in your town; you know, the one with photos of Frank Sinatra on the walls, the one that serves a cheesy chicken tender and french fry sub sandwich! (Maybe also tell them where they can find some Tums for afterwards?) As for the songs, we’d recommend keeping it clean, but other than that, let your freak flag fly. Maybe you want to include a classic (however you define the term), a current bop, and a timeless ballad. Or maybe it’s old school funk for all three. Whatever it may be, be true to yourself and you’ll ace these short answers.

As you look into the future, what gives you hope? (200-250 Word Limit)

Elon is asking this question during a global pandemic, under which hope is not as bountiful as it once was. Admissions is looking to you, oh bright-eyed bushy-tailed young person, for some conviction. So, what gives you hope? Maybe it’s the fact that we can solve the global water crisis in our lifetime if we take the appropriate steps to do so. Perhaps it’s that violent crime has decreased dramatically in the United States since 1990. Or maybe young elected officials are giving you hope in the future of democracy in your country. Choose a topic to write about that truly excites you, and strive to leave the admissions officer who reviews your application more hopeful than they were before reading your essay.
