Moravian College 2020-21 Supplemental Essay Prompt Guide

Regular Decision:

Moravian College 2020-21 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 2 essays of 250 words, 1 essay of 500 words

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Why

Why are you interested in Moravian College? (250 words)

This supplemental essay prompt is as classic as apple pie. In order to knock it out of the park you need to (1) demonstrate a solid knowledge of what Moravian College has to offer, and (2) leverage that knowledge to clearly demonstrate your interest in the school. So, start by researching Moravian (and yes, you will need to do this for every Why essay); direct your attention to the departments, organizations, activities, and other opportunities that interest you. But don’t focus too much on academics–the next question will allow you to expand on your chosen major. Instead, look up notable alumni in your field and pick out clubs you’d like to join. Remember: this essay is relatively short, so once you have at least a page of notes, try to zero in on one central idea as the foundation for your essay: do you want to become the best neuroscientist you can be? Or become a global citizen by taking advantage of study abroad programs and the Peace and Justice minor? Whatever you focus on, make sure your choices reveal something important about who you are and what you value.

Discuss your reasons for pursuing the Major/Academic Program selected above? (250 words)

We told you not to focus too much on academics! You have 250 words to rant and rave about your chosen major or academic program, so our advice is to start with (you guessed it) research. Set aside an hour or so to get cozy with the Moravian College website and read up on your school (hopefully you bookmarked a few pages while preparing your response to the first prompt). What do you love about your chosen major? If you’re interested in the Global Religions major, can you describe the unique opportunities you’ll find at Moravian College? What resources are available to undergrads and how will they guide your craft? If you’re undecided, think about what makes Moravian College the ideal environment for academic exploration. How do you plan to hone in on the perfect major? The more detail you include, the more admissions will learn about you.

What are some of the most important factors in your college decision process? (500 words)

Admissions not only wants to know that you’ve carefully considered your options before applying to Moravian, but they’d also like to learn about what you value. Did you take into consideration the student-teacher ratio since you excelled in small classes in high school? Is the four-year graduation rate important to you? Location, traditions, or job opportunities? There’s no way to answer this question incorrectly, so long as you are true to yourself and your values.
