Lipscomb University 2019-20 Supplemental Essay Prompt Guide

Regular Decision:

Lipscomb University 2019-20 Application Essay Question Explanation

The Requirements: 2 essays of 250 words each

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Activity, Why

Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (250 words)

This is a standard activity essay, and odds are, you’ve seen one just like it before. Our advice has not changed one bit. In responding to this prompt, your job is to tell admissions something they don’t already know about you. When you pick your activity, make sure it doesn’t appear in other essays you’ve written (like your Common App personal statement, for example). This is a perfect opportunity to showcase leadership or communication skills, so choose an activity that matters to you and through which you have grown in tangible ways (getting promoted) or intangible ways (learning the value of listening). Pull your reader into the story using sensory details or other tricks, and your essay will be sure to shine.

Lipscomb University’s intentional, courageous and gracious Christian community appeals to prospective students for a variety of reasons. Briefly describe why you are interested in attending Lipscomb and what specific factors have prompted you to apply. (250 words)

Given the faith-forward nature of this question and of the university website, we imagine that most of you folks reading this guide probably already have a few thoughts on this question. We’d be surprised if the religious affiliation didn’t factor into your decision to apply, but if you haven’t thought about it, now is your chance to reflect on what you might stand to gain. How will pursuing a degree at Lipscomb differ from other colleges? How did Lipscomb land on your radar and why are you taking the time to apply?

Maybe you were raised in a traditional Christian household and you’d like to pursue an education with a strong spiritual foundation. Or perhaps you’ve more recently developed an interest in philosophy and ethics, and you think it would be valuable to study these topics in a religious context. Whether you consider yourself a religious person or not, follow the directions by responding with specific factors that led you to apply. Admissions wants to make sure you’ve done your homework–so don’t let them down.
