Holy Cross College has had it’s heart broken one too many times. So, admissions has just decided to ask you plain and simple: “Why us?” Your reasons can run the gamut. Maybe all of your older siblings went to Holy Cross College and it’s kind of become a family tradition. Maybe you want to go to a Jesuit liberal arts school close to home. If nothing immediately comes to mind, don’t hesitate to familiarize yourself with their website and/or take a virtual tour. Infuse your essay with school-specific details to make sure admissions knows that you’ve done your homework on Holy Cross.
Dependence takes many forms and it’s happening in your daily life. Your story can be as obvious as the cousins you babysit or the swimmers you supervise during lifeguard shifts at your local YMCA. But it can also be less cut and dry. Remember: Your friends depend on you for compassion and support. Your younger siblings depend on you to set an example or to offer guidance. One way to think about this is to ask yourself, “who would be disappointed if I didn’t show up?” Walk yourself through a day, week, or the past year and take note of who counts on you. You might surprise yourself with how integral you are in the lives of those around you. In telling this story, show admissions that you don’t take your responsibilities lightly and appreciate the interconnectedness of your community, however that may be.
