Bishop’s University 2020-21 Application Essay Question Explanation

The Requirements: 1 essay of 250 words, 1 essay of 100-500 words

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Oddball, Why

Why are you interested in Bishop’s University? (250 words)

Why Bishop? Odds are that you’ve seen this prompt before (or one very similar to it) and our advice is the same. Start with research. Go to Bishop University’s website and see what there is to see. What stands out to you? If you have the opportunity to visit campus, even better! Take notes and picture yourself as a student there. Which buildings would you take classes in? Which clubs would you join? Where would you study or meet up with friends on campus? Who would you want to do research with? Make sure to be specific and detailed in order to stand out from similarly qualified applicants.

Choose and complete one of the following (100-500 words):

These prompts are SO much fun!! So, read through, see which one grabs you, and go with your gut. The only mistake you can make when responding to this prompt is overthinking it.

1. If you could have a superhero power what would it be and why?

Easy: flight. But what does that say about you? That you hate getting checked by TSA or live in LA and dread the 405 traffic? Let’s try and think of others that would match up with your goals and passions. For instance, maybe you want to be able to shrink like Ant-Man so you could study nature from a new perspective. There are so many superhero powers to choose from beyond the usual Superman gamut. What about Hulk or Captain Marvel? Personally, we’d love to have Black Widow’s interrogation powers (RIP). This is your chance to have some fun and show admissions the powers of your imagination.

2. What animal do you most identify with and why?

Easy: the Aiy aiy. No? Just us? Okay, how about you think over your own qualities and see how they match up with any animal in the world. Do you lie in wait, observing others before engaging in conversations? (Lion!) Do you like to stick with a pack of close friends and family? (Elephant!) Do you have a tough exterior, but a soft side that you only share with a select few? (Turtle!) Feel free to use a bit of creative license here and metaphor–and don’t forget to have fun with it!

3. What would your “best day ever” look like and why?

Easy: sweatpants and Downton Abbey. This is your chance to share literally anything you want! While you could go nuts and put aside the rules of money & physics (e.g. I want spaghetti for hair and 100 puppies in a ball pit–actually that sounds awful, but you get what we mean…), we recommend sticking to your actual life so admissions can get a sense of what you care about. Maybe you want a lux spa day with your mom or a picnic with all of your relatives from across the globe. And maybe we’ll let you have a little celebrity in there, as a treat. (Cooking class with Gordon Ramsey? Soccer clinic with Megan Rapino? Sure!) Whatever you dream up, make sure you explain why it’s your “perfect day” and how it would make you feel/affect you.

4. If you could travel in time, backwards or forwards, what year would you travel to and why?

Easy: 1912 to warn the crew of the Titanic. Your date might represent a momentous occasion or a simple achievement–either way, explain why it’s meaningful to you and why you’d want to witness it. Maybe you’d like to jump forward and see how global warming has affected the planet so you can help generate impactful solutions now. Maybe you want to go back to the year before you were born to see how boring the world was without you. (For real, what did people DO before they were blessed with your presence???) Whatever time you choose, make sure your response is giving admissions insight into your personality, goals, or character.
