My Child’s College Essay Isn’t Ready: Should We Still Apply Early Decision?

Ivy Divider

essay writing clockThe Early Decision deadline is looming, your child’s personal statement still needs work, and you’re wondering: Should we push through and submit, or would we be better off waiting for Regular Decision?

The answer? It depends. (We know, we know. Not exactly the definitive guidance you were hoping for.)

While applying Early Decision (ED) can offer an admissions advantage at many institutions, submitting a rushed or underdeveloped application could do more harm than good. Before making the call, there are a few important factors to consider.

How Competitive Is Your Child’s Application?

First, take a look at the bigger picture. Are your child’s grades, test scores (if applicable), and extracurricular achievements in line with those of students typically admitted to their dream school?

At highly selective institutions, outstanding academic credentials are often the expectation, not the exception. A compelling personal statement gives your child an opportunity to distinguish themselves from similarly qualified applicants, revealing the personality, perspective, and experiences behind their accomplishments.

And if your child’s academic profile is already on the lower end of the institution’s admitted student range? That makes submitting the strongest possible application all the more important.

No matter how impressive your child’s credentials may be, a lackluster essay isn’t going to do them any favors.

How Much Work Does the Essay Actually Need?

There’s a big difference between an essay that needs a few thoughtful revisions and one that needs a complete overhaul.

Maybe your child has a strong concept but hasn’t quite nailed the execution. Perhaps their essay is polished but doesn’t reveal anything particularly meaningful about who they are. Or maybe they’re still staring at a blinking cursor, hoping inspiration will strike.

These scenarios require very different strategies, and not every essay can be rushed across the finish line.

What About the Supplemental Essays?

Your child may have spent weeks (or months!) perfecting their personal statement, but their supplemental essays deserve just as much attention.

Admissions officers are evaluating the entire application, and the quality of your child’s supplemental essays should match that of their personal statement. If their personal statement is thoughtful, polished, and revealing, but their supplemental essays feel rushed or generic, it could signal that those responses were an afterthought.

The goal is to submit a cohesive application that showcases your child’s personality, interests, and accomplishments from multiple angles. Every essay should contribute something meaningful to the overall picture, not just check another box on the application checklist.

Is Applying Early Decision Worth the Risk?

For highly selective institutions, we generally caution families against applying ED if it means submitting an application that doesn’t reflect the student’s best work.

Yes, ED acceptance rates are often higher than Regular Decision rates, but those numbers don’t tell the whole story. Early applicant pools can look quite different from Regular Decision pools, and higher acceptance rates overall don’t necessarily translate to better odds for every applicant.

Your child gets one opportunity to make a first impression. Is meeting an earlier deadline worth sacrificing the quality of that impression?
